Wings

Page history last edited by Richard 13 years, 7 months ago

It could be very aeronautical themed.  The story I thought up was: your father, an airship captain, is thinking of retiring, and trying to choose which of his children will be the new captain and inherit his airship.  So you are trying to prove yourself and earn your wings.

I wrote that one of the items are actual wings, and with them you fly around a floating island (or the airship) and fight monsters and sky pirates. The wings just offer you a way to access much of the map (think of it as Samus's ball form that she has to acquire). The gameplay turns into a Zelda/Metroid hybrid where it's actually one massive "dungeon" with secret areas to explore and routes that open in old areas as you get new items, but with the kind of puzzles you would see in Zelda, albeit grouped into self-contained subareas so the scope doesn't get too big.

  • Maybe the end objective of all of the dungeons is to acquire the wings? Maybe upgrade them fully with the objective being escaping from somewhere where you are confined? Maybe you're an explorer who entered an ancient fortress from the lost times (sci-fi tech level) and by entering you've activated the fortress defenses and now you must escape. The character might be trapped on his/her home island where disease/plague has destroyed/mutated nearly all life left there and now you're leaving as a last resort.
  • Stylistically (if we can graphically) I'm seeing the wings steampunk like this or this.

Age of Steam: The Great Wing Showdown

Still working with the steampunk setting and Zelda:LttP style adventure gameplay this is a satire on the genre. You are a famous chef (or assistant?) and you'll be competing in the Great Wing Showdown.  In order to be prepared you need to search the world to acquire the 7 secret herbs & spices in your recipe... it just so happens that they're all located in dangerous places and guarded by mighty steam automatons or something.  Once you've done this you are off to compete.

(Ingredients could be normal (cumin, rosemary, paprika) or funny (pheonix wing, dragon wing, gryphon wing, buffalo wing))

We could incorporate phrases like: "The succulence of the meat paired with the zingy spike of the Mantas Mountain Coriander, while the Freya Forest Gemperberries leave a sweet aftertaste... I CAN'T STOP EATING!" and "The Amazing Mumblefoo"

The satire approach might make it easier for the authors as they would rely on cliches and they become funny instead of annoying.

I guess the biggest issue with this idea is that Wings are not incorporated into gameplay in any way, which beats up on Innovation points. It would make no sense (or be heartlessly cruel and hypocritical) to have wings of your own when you're going to be cooking others.

It would be more entertaining to have your opponents be stereotypically haughty jerkwads. For example, upon reaching the entrance to a dangerous forest to get an herb, you see an opponent chef cackling and leaving with his party, having harvested all the herbs in the "easy" area, forcing you to go deeper into the labyrinthine forest to get yours. Should we have a rival character who occasionally helps you out in these situations?

(Idea: For a hard mode, you have to complete an 8th level to acquire soy wings.)

This game idea demands a very stereotypical, humorous, and "fake epic" soundtrack. Examples:

Bird-people

<fixception_> plot: help the last of the Bird People migrate to faraway places before the oppressive government massacres them all for their land
<fixception_> the Bird People themselves could not sprout wings, for they have offended the gods long ago, who sealed their flight away
<fixception_> get their wings back by collecting sacred items, fight the steam army
<Falun> are you one or are you just a do-gooder?
<fixception_> you're a do-gooder
<fixception_> save them by restoring their ability to fly
<Falun> fixception_: is there any way we can make this not "collect items to make the gods happy again" ?
<Falun> like, what did they do to make the gods sad?
<fixception_> Falun: that doesn't necessarily have to be explained
<Falun> I'm digging for ways to vary the story
<Falun> maybe they broke / sold / blah the $MagicStones and the first bit of the game is gathering them
<Falun> so you gather 3 magic rocks or whatever
<Falun> but then nothing happens
<Falun> why?
<Falun> the gods fell asleep because they had no worshipers
<Falun> now you have to wake them up
<Falun> how do you do that?
<Falun> where are they?
<Falun> they're bird-people gods
<Falun> in the sky
<Falun> how do you get there? an airship
<Falun> where do you get the airship?

<Falun> you steal it from the oppressive government

<Falun> ...and then go to the realm of the bird-gods maybe one final dungeon and some end-game boss fight

I'm glad I came up with hot wings so I don't have to continue thinking about this.

pft -- I like this idea
